What to do w/ gingerbread houses? Each of my 2 children made one from the Trader Joe's kits. They only ate a small portion and now they're hard as rock. I don't want to just toss them as they will very likely ask what happened to them. Usually we toss stale bread scraps for the birds, but these have quite a bit of sugar "snow" frosting on them. Any suggestions?

You probably only have two choices. The first one is to make sure it is completely dried out with no moisture left at all (it sounds like you are already there), and then if you want to save it for future holiday seasons go and buy clear spray-on lacquer or varnish to preserve them. After that has dried place them in a storage box and pull them out next year. At my house the quality of decorating is usually questionable, so by the end of the season some of the decorations have fallen off, the kids have picked at them and they just aren't worth saving. I make sure my kids are fully aware that we are going to have to throw them away and we will build new ones. I even give them the chance to pick and it a little more and eat some if they want. Usually this is the deal maker with them as they realize it is not edible anymore and not worth saving. I don't think it is something you would want to feed to the birds either as you are right the sugar is very high, and it is not something naturally you find in a bird's diet.
