  • Can anyone please share their expereiences with full day kindergarten?

My child is going to be entering kindergarten this year. We have opted to enroll in the full day program. I am looking to find other parents who have had a child in a full day program and what you liked and disliked about it. Did it really get your kid farther ahead academically or what did you see in 1st grade as a result of having going full day in kindergarten?

I'm a big Dr. Laura fan. As she says, It think the more time you spend bonding with your own kids the better. I have performed at daycare centers and the youngest toddlers especially have a hard time being away from their parents. The older kids don't seem to mind, but it breaks my heart every time I perform a puppet show at a day care and while I'm setting up I see a kid holding onto the fence crying and waiting for their parents to come back. If you have to use a daycare, pick one that does lots of activities and events. The kids at those schools seem better adjusted.

I have been in education for 40 years and several years back this was an option to parents in some schools. It is a individual choice depending on the child. Is your child a "young" kindergartener? Is your child mellow and laid back? Is your child male? As a general rule boys are not iterested is spending their "whole" day in class unless they are a type A personality. Easy going children sometimes feel overwelmed and are a failure if they cannot complete all that is asked of them, if your little one just turned 5 prior to entering kindergarten he/she may not be ready also.If your child is a busy body, an older kindergartner, a girl, Type A then the answer may be yes. If your child is a older boy, Type A, busy body then probably the answer is yes.
As you can see, I did not give you an answer but maybe the information you can use to make a educated decision. Good Luck.
