Overview

At the Oregon Coast Aquarium, visitors find more than a fascinating variety of marine animals. They find volunteers who greet them, answer their questions. They find volunteers planting native shrubs, painting a wall or cleaning exhibit windows. And behind the scenes are found more volunteers, unpacking stock in the gift shop, helping children in the classroom or preparing food for the animals, all working to carry out the mission of the Aquarium, . . . so the public will better understand and cherish the natural resources of the Oregon coast.

I went to the aquarium yesterday and it was amazing. My two favorite exibits werethe shark exibit and the part where you can touch fish.
The sharks exibit where you went in a glass tunnel and around you were sharks and other fish.
I loved how we could touch the hard seastars and annename and soft rays it was amazing but to get the real affect you have to go there yourself.

Go to the Newport Aquarium and be amazed! See 500 species of animals in stunning indoor and outdoor exhibits. Some of the indoor exhibits include Passages of the Deep, Keiko’s former home, now an undersea adventure featuring sharks, rays and other creatures of the ocean. My favorite section is the Jellyfish. Jellies are models of simplicity. Adult jellies are almost nothing but water - up to 95 percent. Their bell-shaped bodies hold a few organs: a mouth in the center, a ring of oral arms around the mouth and a ring of tentacles along the edge. They are mesmerizing to watch. I wouldn’t want to be stung by one though.
The Alaskan spider crabs may creep you out a bit, but they are really cool to watch interact with each other. I also enjoyed looking at the octopus which reminded me of the Popeye movie from the early 1980’s. The outdoor animals include sea lions and otters. It is fun to find that the animals are eager to interact through the underwater viewing windows. There is also a bird aviary with tufted puffins, rhinoceros auklets, pigeon guillemots, murres, and black oystercatchers. I love watching the puffins.
My all time favorite animal to watch at the Newport Aquarium was the leafy sea dragon. Every time I return to the aquarium, I look for this unique animal and they haven’t had it in years. The animal is a type of seahorse whose appendages look just like leaves. It is quite amazing and allows me to wonder at God’s creativity.

Are you a sucker for the spineless? Go behind-the-scenes on a popular encounter to shake our octopus's hand... er, suckers. Learn about the exciting life of one of the most intelligent invertebrates on this planet!
Spineless... And Spectacular!
Octopuses live along the rocky shores and in tide pools, where they prowl the ocean bottom in search of crab, scallops, clams and other crustaceans. Their soft bodies are extremely flexible, allowing the animal to squeeze in and out of even the narrowest crevice. Their venomous parrot-like beak and the ability to eject ink into the water to blind other animals are some of the octopus’s most effective defensive and predatory tools. Perhaps just as effective, however, is the animal’s intelligence and adaptability. Although it was assumed for years that octopuses were unintelligent creatures, recent studies have demonstrated the animal’s ability to use simple tools, identify individuals, navigate mazes and access both long- and short-term memories.
