Roots and Shoots, a national organization that was started by primatologist, environmentalist and humanitarian Dr. Jane Goodall has begun at the Kansas City Zoo. Become a conservationist in your community. Roots and Shoots is for children ages 10 and older, with a parent, who are interested in helping the environment. Yearly memberships are only $10 per child. You must attend this meeting to enter this program.
Following national program guidelines, members of Roots and Shoots will learn about general conservation while working with the Zoo's Docents and staff. The program will help build leadership skills and teach kids to commit to volunteering. The overall goal is to challenge the students to create conservation projects and then take those projects back to their schools and communities. The Zoo’s Education Department is hoping to inspire kids to take these projects a step further through bimonthly meetings at the Zoo.
The Roots and Shoots motto will be "Think Globally - Act Locally." Meetings will be held at 12 p.m. each Second Saturday of the month.
Each meeting will focus on Zoo Conservation.
