The International School provides a warm multicultural environment where children are fully immersed in Spanish, Japanese or Chinese language and culture. Children become fluent in another language, at home in other cultures, and engaged in math, science, social studies and arts. The International School is Portland's first International Baccalaureate elementary school. It was founded in 1990 and today educates over 460 students from age 3 through 5th grade.

The International School of Portland is a terrific place for your elementary age child to receive immersion education. Small classes, native speakers as teachers, lots of communication with parents, and genuine, caring teachers. My son is in the Spanish track. He started - with no Spanish - in Kindergarten. All of his teachers have been amazing. My son did not read in English when he entered TIS and now, in third grade, he is reading above grade level in English and Spanish. Although the academics are pretty rigorous, the kids have awesome PE, Art, and Music classes and daily recess - yes, recess! I am very happy with the school, and the teachers we have had.

The International School has already exceeded our expectations and we have only been in school a few short months! Our daughter was not doing well in her neighborhood school and was asked to repeat Kindergarten. We took the opportunity to give her a completely different chance at feeling successful and it has paid off. She is interested in learning and enjoys going to school everyday. We cannot be more happy with TIS!

The International School in Portland, Oregon teaches students the love of learning. When approaching a subject, the kids are encouraged to simultaneously think independently and gather input and ideas from others, voice their ideas and consider others' perspectives, give something a try and embrace constructive feedback. By doing so, they become global citizens – proud of their own accomplishments as well as the successes of those around them.

Our daughter is a kindergartener in the Chinese program, and it is astounding how far her language skills have progressed in just a few short weeks thanks to a small class size, a highly experienced teacher and a teaching methodology that encourages inquiry and independent thinking. We also appreciate TIS s focus on art and music, as well as library and PE. Aside from the parking and traffic situation (yikes!) we have been very happy with the school, its instructors, the quality of the staff and the communication with parents. More important, our daughter is very comfortable at TIS and is excited to go to school every morning.

Both of our girls go to TIS and absolutely love it. It isn't just language immersion; it's a warm and supportive environment for children, with challenging academics. I can't imagine our kids going anywhere else.

Very friendly environment for both kids and parents. Teachers and staff are always helpful around campus. Main goal for students are to create World Citizens to enrich our society.

Our daughter is in Spanish Kindergarten this year and we have been very happy with the school - everyday she comes home with stories about what she learned and what she did. She has now surpassed my (limited) Spanish and is thrilled by this!! What I love most about this school, however, is the love shown to her by her teachers.

My son is in Kindergarten and he has learned to speak and write sentences in Chinese as if it is the most natural thing! He is also learning to add and subtract double-digits. His dad and I are English-only speaking Caucasians, so I think some of his success comes from the fact that he is aware he is learning something we don't know! I am thrilled with the skill and professionalism of his teachers....and the sincere love and care they show my son every day.

Language rich, dynamic teachers, global-minded and future-driven. Very welcoming to new families. Love the cross-cultural opportunities with Chinese, Japanese, and Spanish tracks.
