In 1805, the Lewis and Clark expedition discovered the mouth of the Hood River. Subsequent explorers and pioneers discovered the dense forests and rich, fertile soil of the Hood River valley—now internationally famous for its fruit industry. The Mt. Hood Railroad served as an economic lifeline for the valley, carrying fruit and forest products to market since 1906. In the 1920s and 30s the railroad was used as a commuter train by area residents. While still an active freight line, our rail tours now offer visitors some of Oregon’s most breathtaking scenery—from the town of Hood River toward the base of Mt. Hood.

I was very disappointed with the Labor Day train ride. The ride was basically a 20 minute round trip in a dusty old train. There was nothing scenic, and nothing to excite the children! The conductor didn't yell "all aboard". The train was hot, old, and very drab. The top speed was about ten miles an hour, and there was nothing to see at all. If you are going to advertise on kidzlist, at least have something interesting for the kids (i.e. interesting interior, music, something!)
The MAX train in Portland is way more interesting. Also, the amusement park rides at the site sucked. It was on a dusty, gravelly parking lot with lame rides that must have been 30 years old. It was a wasted day, and my kids don't even mention it anymore.

I recently took my 14 year old daughter on the Sunday brunch train. It was such a special day. We didn't have cell service most of the trip, so we actually got to talk to each other! The scenery was amazing, the food was great and the service was wonderful.

When my son was younger (age 5), we did the "Day out with Thomas" excursion. While it is not quite the event as it is back east, there is a large scale Thomas the Tank Engine that pulls the regular train. They have a large gift shop and other "Thomas" activities to keep the children entertained. Go early because it gets really crowded. Be prepared to wait in line for your child's picture with "Thomas". A fun day for younger kids.
