Chicago's Museum of Science and Industry, one of the largest science museums in the world, is home to more than 35,000 artifacts and nearly 14 acres of hands-on exhibits designed to spark scientific inquiry and creativity. We have welcomed more than 175 million guests in our 75 years, and our ongoing mission has been to inspire the inventive genius in all of them with world-class, permanent exhibits such as the U-505 Submarine, the only German U-boat in the United States; or world-premiere temporary exhibits such as 2008's Smart Home: Green + Wired.
Even bigger than our mission is our vision, which is to inspire and motivate our children to achieve their full potential in the fields of science, technology, engineering and medicine. In addition to our fun and interactive exhibits, the Museum's Center for the Advancement of Science Education is continually developing and facilitating student learning labs, after-school science clubs, teen volunteer programs, teacher development classes and community outreach—all ways in which the Museum's seek to make science come alive for children of all ages.

it is a treasure! There are tons of fascinating exhibits. The U-Boat is the biggest attraction, but the museum also has impressive model trains, aircraft, tractors, space flight exhibits, and other fun "sciency" things.

Be blown away by a 40-foot tornado swirling before you. See bolts of lightning crack over your head. Trigger an avalanche. Unleash a tsunami wave.
Science Storms is an unprecedented and dramatic permanent exhibit in newly-named Allstate Court that reveals the extraordinary science behind some of nature’s most powerful and compelling phenomena—tornados, lightning, fire, tsunamis, sunlight, avalanches and atoms in motion.
Inside the 26,000-square-foot exhibit, you’ll investigate the basic principles of chemistry and physics that are responsible for nature’s biggest wonders, while you get a hands-on, up-close look at these wonders themselves. Science Storms puts you in the middle of the action and lets you search for answers as to how and why things happen in nature.
Control a 40-foot tornado and experiment with air pressure and wind speed.
Trigger a 20-foot avalanche to reveal the beauty of granular dynamics.
Witness a high-voltage lightning storm from a giant Tesla coil, 20 feet in diameter, to discover electricity and magnetism.
Wage a battle of fire vs. water in a live-fire experiment, and see how a flame reacts to different conditions.
Make your own giant rainbows with optical prisms, recreating Newton’s famous prism experiment, to observe the physical nature of light.
Discover the power and motion of waves by unleashing your own tsunami across a 30-foot wave tank.
Transform water into vapor, then into ice and back to water again to explore states of matter.

The Great Train Story replaces the Museum's 60-year-old model railroad exhibit and boasts a 3,500 square foot layout, which depicts the railroad's winding journey between Chicago and Seattle, passing through the Midwest, the Plains States, the Rockies, the Cascades, and into the Pacific Northwest. With more than 1,400 feet of track and 34 operating trains, the new model train includes an excess of 500 scale structures; 192 custom-made buildings including a 14-foot Sears Tower; realistic terrain modeled from actual locations and dotted with thousands of trees and shrubs; 28 bridges over realistic waterways; as well as a number of interactive activities, including the opportunity to drive a Metra Train, open a drawbridge over the Chicago River, harvest timber in the Cascades Range and bore a tunnel through the Rocky Mountains!
