The American Girl business was founded as Pleasant Company in 1986 by Pleasant T. Rowland and was acquired by Mattel, Inc. in 1998. American Girl products are marketed and distributed through the company's award-winning catalogue; its Web site, americangirl.com; and at its proprietary retail stores. The American Girl books are also available in bookstores nationwide.

We took our daughters, ages 5 & 7 to lunch at the American Girl Cafe. It was wonderful, starting with the pink, white, and black decor, the clip-on chairs for the dolls, and the take-home hair scrunchies that served as napkin rings. The service was excellent, the price reasonable, and the food tastier than I expected, with large portions and a fun presentation. We started with warm yummy cinnamon rolls and hot cocoa (with unlimited refills). The girls loved their fruit kabobs, pretzels, veggies and dip platter and "feeding" bits to their dolls using the doll tea cups and saucers. My quiche and salad was excellent, and the girls enjoyed the "American girl picnic lunch" (mini hot dog, burger, mac 'n cheese, and cantaloupe) . Dessert was the best part--a sugar cookie, a white cake "petit fours" heart, and a chocolate mousse flowerpot. We will definitely come back!
