Last updated Dec-17-11
Old Wives' Tales (OWT) has been open since 1980 and is Portland's first and oldest restaurant with a children's playroom and healthy children's menu. OWT serves multi-ethnic vegetarian, chicken and seafood dishes with a salad bar, homemade vegetarian and vegan soups daily, sandwiches and entrees. We serve breakfast anytime, and lunch, dinner, desserts, beer and wine. Much attention is given to special dietary needs: 90% of our dishes are gluten-free and our menu provides many options for those with lactose intolerance, soy allergies, and vegetarian and vegan diets. We have easy, free parking in our parking lot.
We are always cooking up new specials and engaging with the community in new ways. So if you'd like to keep up with new happenings at Old Wives' Tales, then please connect with us on facebook: http://www.facebook.com/oldwivestalesrestaurant

This is one of my family's favorite places. The kiddos love the playroom and I love being able to eat real food while they play. I always get the Hungarian Mushroom soup with the salad bar and the hubs usually gets the Japanese veggie pancake or something from the specials. We always get the pumpkin pudding for dessert. It has tofu in it and the kids love it. (Don't tell them it has tofu in it! Haha. You'd never know, it's delish.) It's a really low key place and feels homey. Love!

I love this place because they serve breakfast every day, all the time, until they close each evening. With my kids in the playroom, my husband and I can relax with a second cup of coffee or a second glass of wine in a relaxing atmosphere with background music at a reasonable volume. Since they don't have hamburgers or fries or pizza, the kids have learned that eating at a restaurant means more than the fat-laden food on most children's menus and love putting together their own salads at the salad bar to go with their natural grilled chicken -- no breading!

Three generations of our family has loved this restaurant for over 30 years. Old Wives' Tales has had a children's playroom since 1980 (many parents who played there as children now bring their own children there!) and the most extensive children's menu in town including many gluten-free, dairy-free and soy-free choices. Everything is made from scratch without preservatives, food coloring or other additives. The adult menu features multi-ethnic chicken, vegetarian and seafood dishes. Nothing is deep-fried.

I have been going here since they opened over 30 years ago. They have a large menu to suit all tastes and since they don't have a deep fryer, their large children's menu is the healthiest you will find anywhere. Their children's playroom makes it possible to have a leisurely adult meal, while the kids explore the playroom. They actually list ingredients in each dish, so you know what you are getting and can avoid allergens.

I so don't love this place. I have been twice and found it too expensive for the quality. Just not worth it. Some people love this restaurant but I don't like it at all.
