What a great place to take a hike. We attended their annual trillium festival where they had some kid activities as well as plant sale. The kid activities were okay, but the hiking is far worth it. If you are looking for somewhere that is free and you just want to run some energy out of your kids this is a great place. You can go for really long walks or shorter ones. My 4 year old got tired of walking after an hour or so, but there are some close trails right by the nature center that have benches if you need to stop. The one thing I really like about Tryon is the trails are nice and wide. They are very well taken care of, so you don't have to worry about debris and other stuff to climb over like so many nature areas in Portland.
My kids for the first time got to see a stuffed coyote in the nature center so that was very cool. We have coyote's that live right behind us, so seeing one in the flesh was a huge hit.

What a nice place to picnic and hike and learn. It's close in and has lots of great trails (with an easy to follow map). There are many fantastic events scheduled throughout the year through Friends of Tryon Creek State Park. We were fascinated by art installations when we were there in the fall ('08) with corresponding activities for the kids along the trail. There are some critters too, my kids especially loved seeing the crawfish in the creek.

Nice little park in the city with good trails. Not easy but not difficult. My 70yr old mother found it more difficult but my kids seem to enjoy it just fine. Close to town for an easy afternoon or weekend jaunt.

Discover the many types of winged creatures that fly through the forest such as birds, bees, bats and dragonflies. Participants will explore the forested trails of the park, create nature related works of art, study fascinating animal specimens and enjoy exciting nature stories.
